Language The monster Essay
The setting makes the reader feel tense because the bad weather in chapter 5 gives the reader the idea that there is a sense that the atmosphere is very ominous and this gives the impression that something bad is going to happen, this type of omen gives the reader a tense feeling because it gives the reader an opportunity to pre-empt the fact that soon the tension will break and it will break into some kind of bad happening. An example of this is when in chapter 5 where there is a slight description of what is happening around the room, and outside the room ââ¬Å"the rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt outâ⬠this gives the impression to the reader that something big is soon to happen, because when your candle burnt out, you canââ¬â¢t see anything. Pathetic Fallacy is when someone gives inanimate features to an inanimate object, for example if you were to talk to a cushion as though it was a real person. Pathetic Fallacy gives the reader thee impression that Victor within chapter 5 feels very isolated and cannot talk to anyone, this is because he doesnââ¬â¢t want to tell anyone about his creation. Language The monster is described as having ââ¬Å"yellow skinâ⬠and having a ââ¬Å"shrivelled complexion and straight black lipsâ⬠this explains that Victorââ¬â¢s creation has human features but they are presented in an inhuman way. The way that this creation is described is in the way that it isnââ¬â¢t human but it is a monster. This connotes that the monster is rather frightening to think about with his yellow skin and to think it is human is very scary. Victor thinks of his monster as scary and intimidating, although in chapter 5 Victorââ¬â¢s creation doesnââ¬â¢t actually do anything to Victor, he does actually run away from him when faced with him. ââ¬Å"One hand was stretched out, seemingly to detain me, but I escaped and rushed downstairs. â⬠This at this point of the story shows us that the monster is a bad thing to behold, that it was intending to seek revenge on Victor, but as the reader we donââ¬â¢t know really what is happening. Also we donââ¬â¢t actually know if Victorââ¬â¢s creation is actually as it says in the quote ââ¬Å"trying to detain meâ⬠because he may be twisting the readers point of view, because of Victor being the narrator for most of the novel The reader associates monsters and devils with Victorââ¬â¢s monster because within chapter 5 when the monster is created. In the quote below gives a clear example of the creation being linked with omens and portents, ââ¬Å"when, by the dim and yellow light of the moon, as it forced its way through the window shutters, I beheld the wretchâ⬠. This gives the impression that the creation is a sign of evil that is associated by the moon omen, because as well earlier in the chapter Victor claimed that the monsterââ¬â¢s eyes appeared to be yellow like the moon. The full moon omen is an association with evil because it is supposed that when the full moon comes out all you can hear is the howling of a werewolf and that is a sign of evil The effect of oxymorons helps the reader with the description of Victorââ¬â¢s monster in chapter 5 ââ¬Å"for example ââ¬Å"but these luxuries only formed a more horrific contrast with his watery eyesâ⬠this quote is saying that victor made tried making his monster with ââ¬Å"beautifulâ⬠characteristics but then says that these beautiful characteristics came out wrong ââ¬Å"with his watery eyesâ⬠. This explains why Victor escapes from his creation later on in the chapter; he looks at the monsters hideous features and doesnââ¬â¢t take into account his interior. Victor within chapter 5 uses the fact that he is the narrator to his advantage, because of this Victor can say anything about the monster he wants and because he is the narrator the reader will believe this ââ¬Å"one hand stretched out, seemingly to detain meâ⬠this is a prime example of manipulating the reader at this point, because the narrator says ââ¬Å"seemingly to detain meâ⬠everyone believes it. This has an intriguing effect on the audience because the first thing you do as a reader is believe everything that the narrator says , however in this sense the narrator is can be very manipulative and can take advantage of what the reader may know or may not know. This is different to what victor originally thought of his monster, originally Victor thought that his monster would be a good idea because it is an original idea and everyone would praise him for the thing he had created, then if it turned out well then even more praise would come his way. ââ¬Å"Although I possessed the capacity of bestowing animation, yet to prepare a frame for the reception of itâ⬠this is showing that victor thought of creating animation as a good idea and that he couldnââ¬â¢t wait to put it into practice. Originally Victor thought of his creation as a excellent idea and he wanted to be the inventor of a revolutionary idea, Victor wanted to be like god in a way, however as we find out through chapter 5 he doesnââ¬â¢t even want the credit for his invention There is an ammount of symbolism within chapter 5, for instance the idea that Victor created life from nothing is symbolic to religion and how god ââ¬Å"apparentlyâ⬠created everything from nothing from his own power. ââ¬Å"I collected the instruments of life around meâ⬠this giââ¬â-ves the impression that victor thinks of himself as a god-like person, that maybe he thought after creating this he would be known in history. Conclusion I think that Mary Shelly did meet her aim to ââ¬Å"curdle the blood and quicken the beatings of the heartâ⬠because the novel always keeps the reader on edge all of the time, the reader never knows what is coming next. For its time I think that the novel was rather frightening for its time because at that time no-one knew anything that we know in modern day science, so this novel would be what is called sci-fi in the modern day. Today of all the people that still read this novel they still find it a fascinating read because it is quite sci-fi like even to us now, we may now know that you wonââ¬â¢t make life out of dead bodies using galvanism but it is still interesting.

Russia - Egypt Relations Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Russia - Egypt Relations - Term Paper Example Russia and Egyptââ¬â¢s relationship is historically complex and has varied considerably along dimensions of cooperativeness throughout the past one hundred years based on global events that include regions like the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. Russia has traditionally seen Egypt as a strategic partner, connecting it to the Middle East for trade and regional influence, while Egypt has traditionally seen Russia as a key trading partner to secure wealth and military infrastructure. In that sense, the political interests of the two nations have generally been congruent. Exceptions to that have occurred with philosophical changes at the top of Egyptââ¬â¢s government ââ¬â rather than due to changes with Russia ââ¬â which is why the relationship is best understood from the perspective of who was in power in Egypt throughout the period. With that in mind, the modern Russia-Egypt relationship can be described in phases: the first phase representing a warm and open association with the Nasser regime, the second phase representing a cold and close association with the Sadat regime, and the third phase from Mubarak to today in which Russia is again treated as a close ally. The most helpful place to start with an examination of Russia-Egypt relations is to look at its historical foundation, which began as early as the 1500s and so not surprisingly, based in religion. At that time, the Orthodox Christian tradition was very strong within the Russian political landscape and would significantly influence Russiaââ¬â¢s decision to get involved with Egyptââ¬â¢s religious and political affairs. Patriarch Joachim of Alexandria sent correspondence to Russian Czar Ivan IV for assistance to the Sinai Peninsula-based Saint Catherineââ¬â¢s Monastery, which had been contested by Turkish fighters1. In response, Ivan IV sent a Russian delegation to visit sites across Egypt. Since that showing of support, Russia continued to provide support for Egyptââ¬â¢s Christian population, which accounts for roughly one-tenth of Egyptââ¬â¢s total population as of 20102.Ã

Observational assignment police ride along Personal Statement
Observational assignment police ride along - Personal Statement Example With over thirty years of experience between them I felt pretty safe! The officers planned to set up a road block on the main street that leads to the largest disco in town, but that plan would have to wait. On our way to set up the roadblock to the main disco the officers got an emergency call from a smaller disco that that there had been a fight between a Russian and an Italian. The Italian had been stabbed in the shoulder so while we waited for the ambulance the officers questioned both men. It was very interesting to watch their interrogation methods. They spoke to the men separately and asked them the same questions over and over but the officers cleverly reworded the questions to see if they could identify any contradictory statements. It was fascinating to watch. Once the officers gathered information from the victim and the witness the ambulance transported the Italian to the hospital. The officers found an outstanding warrant on the Russian for a failure to appear in court so he was arrested even though the charges for the stabbing were still pending a full investigation. Then we moved on to set up the major roadblock. Unlike American patrol methods where officers drive around neighborhoods, German patrol officers use the tactic of setting up roadblocks at potentially troublesome locations and remain stationary allowing the trouble to come to them. After setting up at our location at 23:27 officer Schmidt pulled over a 2000 BMW and began questioning the nineteen year old occupant. As officer Schmidt took the man's information he also was observing his behavior, how he answered questions, what his eyes looked liked. Based on what office Schmidt observed he asked the driver to submit to a breathalyzer test which registered at 1.2 pro mille. The man was arrested for DWI. At that point Officer Schmidt took the opportunity to educate me about the consequences of DWI. He said since the man was nineteen and still on Germany's two year probation for young drivers, he probably would not be able to drive again for years. In addition, he will have to pay a fine ranging from 2000 to 3500 euros. The next call we received was a report of an overdose in the large disco. A 17 year old girl apparently overdosed on ecstasy pills and was being rushed to the nearest hospital. When we arrived the officers questioned the girls "friends" but of course none of the "friends" knew anything about where she got it or how much she took. Naturally the officers were skeptical but didn't push the issue and seemed satisfied that at least the girl was on her way to hospital. At about 2:00 the traffic from the disco had begun to slow down so the officers decided to patrol around the city. As we drove around office Schmidt noticed a 2003 model Opel without a license plate parked on the main artery. The circumstances seemed to indicate a stolen vehicle so the officers called in the VIN number and sure enough the car had been reported stolen two weeks earlier. I noticed the officers were very careful not to disturb any evidence as they obtained the VIN number and inspected the vehicle. They told me that car thefts have been on the rise in the area over the last few years. Thieves take the cars across the border into Poland and then strip them and part them out making the stolen vehicles very difficult to find. Officer Schmidt then called a towing company to take the car to impound where a team of specialists from

Henry inquiry into taxation and the report recommendation Essay - 1
Henry inquiry into taxation and the report recommendation - Essay Example Other areas of possible taxation concern so-called ââ¬Å"social sinsâ⬠such as tobacco or alcohol, environmental charges etc (Thompson et al, 2010). In other words, destroying human practices should be taxed. The Australian government does not accept the Report to the fullest extent. It claims that many points of a new taxation project should be reviewed otherwise ââ¬Å"it will not implement â⬠¦ at any stageâ⬠(Thompson et al, 2010). The government agrees upon some recommendations of Henry Report, but introduces its own corrections. For example, to reduce company tax from 30 to 29 per cent, but not to 25 per cent, as it is suggested in Henry Report. From this point of view, it is possible to claim that Labor Party has suggested more radical measures to be taken by the government in the sphere of taxation and the government suggests more consequential introduction of taxation reform. The most challenging recommendation of Henry Report is the RSPT or tax on resources. Currently, as it is suggested by the Report, there is a need to suggest a more effective means of raising revenue. Profits above normal return on the capital invested will be introduced in July 2012. Still, the government does not seem to acclaim this recommendation as it does not seem doubtlessly relevant to them. In accordance with Henry Report, ââ¬Å"the benefits of including them [some non-renewables] under the RSPT are unlikely to outweigh the costs (compliance and administration)â⬠(Henry Taxation Review, 2011). Henry Report is an innovative vision on Australian taxation appealing for swift and radical changes for Australia. Some points were approved by the Australian government with some corrections. Basically, there are beneficial social, economical and environmental implications in this taxation reform. On the one hand, Labor Party is on the right innovative way of Australian taxation system change and makes an attempt to increase benefits for the

The early 20th century USA, Latin America, and Africa Essay - 1
The early 20th century USA, Latin America, and Africa - Essay Example le, there three distinctive trends that they had; there was a tendency to be less and less accessible to the average person, a tendency to glorify art itself as well as to undercut traditional standards and values. A period before the 20th century, music was pretty easy for the average person to understand because they followed common harmonic patters that one could find to frequently popular tunes. (Hoffer, Charles pg. 67) However in the 20th century, composers began to move away from these patters toward what is called atonal music, that which has a pattern not easy to recognize. The century brought with it new freedom and wide experimentation with new musical styles and forms that challenged the accepted rules of early periods. Industrialization led to the inventions of electronic instruments and synthesizer that revolutionized popular music and speeded up the development of new form of music. A good case study is a Latin American music, which has a variety of styles that arrived in America and eventually become influential from the early Spanish and European Baroque to the different beats of the African rhythms.( Gopal, Sarvepalli pg. 102) On the other hand, in visual arts too, the three tendencies could be seen; artists could combine a multiple of perspectives, looking at an object from different points of view and sometimes at different times. It was not easy for an average person to interpret a simple piece of art rather than simply appreciating the artââ¬â¢s use of color, line, composition, as well as the artistââ¬â¢s feelings. They were also influenced by the various movements that fought for the peopleââ¬â¢s rights and freedom. Africans used various songs to mobilize their members against imperialisms; they also drew diagrams that could only be interpreted by them. But in the 20th century pieces of art have been used to give us, not unfamiliar images, but images that are as familiar as they can possibly be. People have been able to express their feelings in
